Grenada Swimmers Medal at CISC Cuba

On 25th June, 2010 seven swimmers, coach , manager and supporters travelled to Cuba for the CISC swimming Championships. The team was met at the air port by Grenada’s Ambassador to Cuba, Mr. Raphael Joseph who welcomed the swimmers to Cuba, he also organized a tour for them while they were there.

They soon settled in with two training sessions in the National pool before competition started on 28th June.

The Meet was quite exciting, especially when Oreoluwa Cherebin girls 11-12, just from riding high, after her Carifta gold medal in which she did 38.25in 50m breaststroke, lived up to expectations; securing a fantastic gold in the 50m breaststroke from Cuba, with Surinam taking bronze. It was nail biting finish with personal best times for her of 37.42. She followed this up with another brilliant swim, coming from third place to second with silver in the 100m breaststroke, a personal best time of 1:23.65. Oreoluwa then  secured a 5th  place with another personal best  in 200m breaststroke with 3:07 in the finals.

Grenada Ambassador to Cuba Mr. Raphael Joseph was there that night, was delighted to present Oreoluwa with her gold medal to the rousing National anthem.

Also in the 11-12 age group, Corey Ollivierre performed fantastically in the breaststroke events, securing 5th in the 50m breaststroke and 6th in the 200m breaststroke. In all he made personal best times and swam very hard making his team proud.

Andrew Hopkin in his first CISC produced season bests in two of his breaststroke events.

For the seniors Ayesha Noel in 15- 17 girls, back in training after CXC managed to qualify for five finals placing 6th in 400m I.M, 7th in 200m I.M., 800m and 400m freestyle and 8th in 200m backstroke. Esau Simpson in 18 & over also placed in three finals with 7th in 200m I.M, 5th in 200m freestyle and 8th in 50m backstroke.

For the first time open water swimming was included in the CISC Championships. Grenada sent two swimmers. In rough seas. Senior Chris Regis took a bronze medal, his first International medal and Junior Khalil John placed 7th They did Grenada proud.

Coach Nataly Regis was delighted by the swimmers performances and the team thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Cuba. GASA would like to congratulate the swimmers and thank all their sponsors and the parents who made the trip possible.

National Swim Team Set For Cuba

The Grenada Amateur Swimming Association is delighted to announce their 2010 CISC National Swim Team. The nine member Team and supporters leaves Grenada on the 25th June 2010, for Trinidad en route to Cuba for the Championships. This year for the first time, an open water swimming event, is included in the program and GASA was successful in having two male swimmers, qualify for this event at the recent Barbados 5km open water swim event.

The Swimmers are in high spirits and are very motivated, working very hard towards this upcoming meet, Coach Regis has intensified their training sessions and they are meeting this challenge, even though they are studying hard for their final term exams and CXC.

Our CARIFTA medalists Corey Ollivierre and Oreoluwa Cherebin are hoping to better their times and. to reach finals and improve on their stunning success from CARIFTA with better results in Cuba. Andrew Hopkin also CARIFTA finalist is aiming to medal and have personal best times in Cuba also. Veterans Esau Simpson and Ayesha Noel who will be representing Grenada, at the CAC games in Puerto Rico in July will be using CISC meet to prepare for the open championships. Chris Regis and Khalil John will be our first National Open Water Swimmers, as this is a new event. They did very well in Barbados, finishing under an hour and a half, so we expect a great showing by them.

GASA blesses the team and pray great success for them, and ask the nation to keep them in payers as they go to represent our nation proudly and fly our flag high.

We say a big thank you those who have come forwards and supported the team – coaches, parents, friends of swimming and Sponsors.

Summons to the IIXX Caribbean Island Swimming Champsionships

Hereby the C.C.C.A.N summons Member Federations of the Caribbean Islands – Surinam, from the South American Swimming Confedeations and Gudeloupe and Martinique, from the French Swimming Federation – participate in the above- mentioned Championship as per the following requirements.

Date: 26th June – July 2, 2010

Venue: Baragua Complex, Pan-American Village, Havana, Cuba
