Grand Mal Swim success

On Saturday 7th March the Grenada Amateur Swimming Association hosted their first Community open water swim. The event started at the playing field in Grand Mal and saw 40 youngsters take to the slightly rough water in what proved to be two competitive races. In the junior 800m swim 15 competitors fought for supremacy. Riley Brathwaite took first place for the females closely followed by Deleon Felix 2nd and Chelsey LaTouche 3rd.. For the males 1st place was Dexter Yowching with two Grand Mal boys Shondell Cadore 2nd and Shondel Patrick 3rd. Enya Noel and Christian Warner , only 7 years each were the youngest competitors to finish. In the senior event, the 2km 25 athletes took to the waters amid cheers from their supporters. The sea picked up some rough waves during the event and swimmers had to battle for shore. Local swimmer Chris Regis won the event and took first place male trophy closely followed by Esau Simpson 2nd Male. Sophia Noel and sister Ayesha looked like a synchronized swimming team in the last 300 meters with Sophia just out running Ayesha on to the beach to take 1st female, Ayesha 2nd. TJ Clavert and Julia Bisschop from SGU took 3rd male and female respectively.
Special awards were given out to the best Grand Mal female performance – Francisca Cadore and Male performer Chris Regis.
The event was generously sponsored by local business Leslies Agency with Mr. Leslie Ollivierre assisting in presentation of the awards. His help was very much appreciated. Thanks also goes to the Grenada Red Cross and Dr. Douglas Noel who were on hand for safety and the local boats who supported the swimmers.
Nataly Regis Grenada’s head National swim coach and main event organizer was delighted with the performances of all the swimmers. The 40 swimmers are now looking forward to the next open water event , the Grenada Cross Harbour swim carded for 28th March. GASA then plans to continue the open water series in Gouyave.
